Estate planning is not just for wealthy individuals and families. Wills, trusts and other estate planning tools can aid in the smooth transfer of assets and can help ensure that your wishes are carried out after your death. If you are subject to federal estate taxes, estate planning is critical to protecting your hard-earned assets for future generations. Powers of attorney can allow you to appoint a trusted individual to make financial decisions in the event you cannot manage your assets because of incapacity.
By creating a living will (health care directive) you can let your family, friends and medical providers know what medical care and life support you want in different situations. By naming a health care surrogate (medical power of attorney) you can designate who would make medical decisions for you if you were incapacitated.
In addition to drafting wills, trusts, and living wills, I also help clients with the sometimes complicated process of probate and estate administration.
No One Likes to Think About Death or Incapacity
Estate planning is an emotionally-charged area of the law. You may feel uncomfortable dealing with issues related to your death or possible incapacity. However, establishing a comprehensive estate plan can be a wonderful gift for your family and heirs. Careful planning can ensure that your assets are protected, your wishes are recorded, and the proper individuals receive the possessions and assets that you wish them to have after you are gone. It can also avoid having your friends, family and doctors guessing about your wishes regarding health care decisions and end-of-life medical care.
I am sensitive to the particular emotions that you may experience and I will work hard to compassionately guide you through the processes that may be required to protect yourself and your family in the future.
The Tax Implications of Estate Planning
Like death and incapacity, taxes are a fact of life. Having previously worked at a boutique tax law firm handling international tax matters, I understand tax law. These were extremely technical cases, requiring a great deal of skill and attention to detail. I am qualified to effectively handle my clients' sophisticated estate planning issues and the tax matters that may arise throughout the process.
